At Palmetto Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, our doctors both place and restore traditional and mini dental implants in Sumter, SC. If you are missing teeth or would like to stabilize poorly fitting dentures, dental implants can provide a reliable, permanent solution. Our doctors handle the entire dental implant process at our office, from exam and design to surgery, restoration, and maintenance. The level of comprehensive care you will receive at one convenient location from our skilled team is unsurpassed.
The dental implant process begins with a consultation, during which your doctor will review your medical and health history and discuss your concerns and expectations. He will then thoroughly assess your teeth, oral soft tissues, associated anatomical structures, and bone density. Patients who have lost jawbone density over time may require a bone graft to become candidates for dental implants. Other patients who have a low-lying sinus cavity may require a sinus lift prior to implant placement. These procedures are most often performed by a local oral surgeon. We can provide bridge augmentation in certain cases.
Traditional Dental Implants
Dental implants consist of small titanium posts that are surgically placed in the jawbone during an outpatient procedure. Over the course of two to six months, the implants fuse with the jaw. Once this process, called "osseointegration," is complete, you will undergo a second brief procedure to attach abutments to the heads of the implants. Then, your final restoration – a crown, bridge, or full or partial denture – can be attached to the implants. We offer both fixed and removable implant-retained dentures. The entire traditional implant procedure takes between three months and a year, depending upon healing time.
Traditional and mini implants each offer unique benefits.
Mini Dental Implants
For patients whose jawbone density is not sufficient to support traditional implants, but are not candidates for bone grafting, our doctors may recommend mini dental implants. Mini implants feature a smaller diameter and do not require flap surgery in the gum tissue; they are inserted through gum tissue into the densest part of the jaw. Four to six mini implants can hold a full denture. Because mini implant placement surgery is less complex than traditional implant surgery, healing time is faster. Due to their small size, mini implants cannot withstand as much chewing force as traditional implants, so mini implants may not be the best option for patients who grind their teeth.
Our doctors handle the entire dental implant process at our office, from exam and design to surgery, restoration, and maintenance.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants involve a commitment that most patients believe is entirely worthwhile, as dental implants offer so many benefits:
- Patients can eat any type of food, even sticky foods that would dislodge conventional dentures.
- Patients can enjoy the peace of mind that dentures will not slip out of place at an inopportune moment.
- Denture adhesive is no longer necessary, nor are denture care routines.
- Implants are permanent and will not require refitting or replacement.
- Implants prevent bone degeneration that can occur with tooth loss by stimulating jaw tissue.
- The restored implant can fill out the soft tissues of your face, giving you a renewed, more youthful appearance, and boosting your confidence.
