What Causes Dental Discoloration?

Most dental stains are extrinsic, or located in the outer layers of your teeth. This type of discoloration is most often the result of certain foods and beverages. Dark-colored substances, like red wine, tea, and coffee, will leave pigmented molecules over time that can give your smile a yellow or brown tint. Smoking can have a similar effect. Dental erosion can increase the rate at which stains develop. The underlying layers of your teeth (dentin) are more porous than enamel and can become discolored more easily.

Though it is a quick and simple treatment, whitening can have dramatic effects for your smile and overall appearance.

In some cases, you may develop intrinsic stains on the inside of your teeth. Most often, this discoloration will develop because of certain medications, such as tetracycline. Dental infection can also lead to internal staining. Whitening cannot remove interior stains, however, we can recommend an alternative treatment, such as dental bonding or porcelain veneers.

Take-home Whitening

In order to start your take-home whitening, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and create your custom whitening trays. After filling the trays with whitening gel, you will wear the trays for two to four hours a day, usually for two to six weeks. Though it has a milder formula than in-office whitening gel, the product will have a similar effect as it breaks down the chemical bonds between stains. The trays will fit securely around your teeth to prevent the gel from touching your gums. After the full course of treatment, take-home whitening can achieve comparable effects to in-office bleaching.

The Benefits of Teeth Whitening

Though it is a quick and simple treatment, whitening can have dramatic effects for your smile and overall appearance. Your enhanced smile could brighten your whole face and help you to look noticeably younger. In turn, you will feel more confident – not only about your appearance but also during social interactions.
